About our Course

R&D scientists and engineers involved in new product, service or process development should have a fundamental understanding of what intellectual property rights are key to their technology and business.  By securing legal protection for their creative activities, such as patent protection, they can prevent competitors from copying their inventions and so maximise the return on their investment.

Register to learn how to identifiy inventions, assess patentability, draft the patent application, then file and prosecute it to grant.

While this course focuses largely on patents, other forms of IP rights, such as trade secrets, copyright and designs, are also covered.

Day 1 provides an overview of the key IP rights, the patenting process, how to read patents and interpret claims, and ownership of IP rights.  Day 2 drills down into the detail of how to identify novel inventions and distinguish them from the prior art, draft the patent application, and how to deal with the objections raised in the the examination process before the national and regional Intelllectual Property Offices (IPOs) such as the UK IPO (UKIPO), the European Patent Office (EPO) and the World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO).  Post grant matters such as enforcing your patent against infringers, defending challenges to its validity, and monetizing through licensing are also covered.

Who Should Attend?

This course is intended for R&D scientists (e.g., chemists, biologists, physicists) and engineers (e.g., chemical, mechanical, software) involved in applied research.  Project managers and business development professionals may also benefit from attending.
